D6540 aims to change the world by developing Teen Brain Xplained, a group program offered at low to no cost to teens and their parents.
Our project, the Teen Brain Xplained, is a psychoeducational course designed to support both adolescents and their parents by providing accurate information and practical skills grounded in the research and published works of Dr. Daniel J. Siegel. The course aims to normalize the challenges of adolescence, enhance communication, detect emerging mental health issues early, and build resilience in both adolescents and their parents.
A 5-session program uses evidence-based strategies to:
- help understand and normalize changes in the teen brain,
- introduce ways to manage complex - but typical - challenges, and
- Stay connected by developing skills for the parent, child (12 – 16 years old), and their evolving relationship.
Each session will include psychoeducational content, didactic exercises, and mind-body strategies to support healthy adolescent development.
Comment from parent after the first focus group:
| "I am so thankful. What I thought was abnormal behavior based on how my child used to be, turns out to be completely normal for an adolescent! It's like I can understand the language my child is speaking." |
If you have heard the story about District Governor Brent Sheppard and his family, you know that one question sparked a movement to address the service gap for our teens and parents.
